Touch, the underestimated action

Touch is an important thing. I think more important to men than to women.

Touch starts as something we need as a baby to show us during that purely instinctive state, that someone is there to love us, care for us, and ultimately make sure we don’t die.

Moving into adulthood, touch is a touchy subject. (lol couldn’t help myself) Man hugging a woman, man hugging a man, husband touching a wife or a father hugging a son or daughter. You have all seen the butt slaps in sports, high fives and of course fist bumps. Touch is one of the most effective ways we communicate to other people.

Rich Froning Hug

After a WOD, nothing is better than a fist bump from a buddy or workout partner. This feeling of coming together against an enemy and celebrating the completion is so satisfying.

For men, it is difficult I think. If you touch a women, and they dont want that touch, you are creepy. If a woman touches a man, well hell, she can just do so and people will nine times out of ten receive it with open arms.

Ladies Hug

We all need touch. Don’t forget about your man though. He needs touch too. Probably more than you think. A brush of the arm, a pat on the back, or butt, goes miles. It makes us feel loved, strong and cared about.

Don’t you want your man to feel that way?

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

You know carrying more muscle will make you die sooner right?

The Crux

The Crux

When I first started down my fitness journey I had so much support. Everyone was thrilled I was getting after it. “Nice work Adrian!” “That is so awesome buddy!” and “I’m going to start too!” were very common to hear from many many people out there.

As time went on people continued to congratulate me. I started to get the standard jokes: “Hey muscles…” or “Another protein shake??”. The funny thing was, the comments I was receiving were changing. They were no longer about how they wanted to start exercising. I was no longer being encouraged. The comments were turning towards questions and jokes that were more insulting than anything.

Anyone that has started down the path of truely changing their lifestyle for the better has seen this same progression in their friends and loved ones. I read about it everywhere, I see internet memes every day about this. But why?

My Theory

Maintaining the Status Quo. I think this is really it. If you think about human nature, generally speaking, people want things to stay the same. Change is seen as risk, and risk is seen as danger. So that person that is bettering themselves is not maintaining the status quo. They are straying from the path.

Now that we have that theory established we can build understanding around people’s actions. The jokes, the lack of continued encouragment can be related back to the danger others are seeing in front of them.

Well now what?

There are a couple ways to deal with this in my opinion.

  • Ignore the comments
  • Argue
  • Attempt to change their opinion
  • Rage
  • Put a pencil in their eye
  • Ask: “Do you even lift?”
  • Rage
  • Pour some fish oil under the seat of their car
  • Squat, becuase if you can’t fix it with fish oil or squats, you’re fucked.

My Choice

I have strongly considered many of the items in the above list. I have tried out quite a few. Rage feels good, but has no effect. The pencil didn’t go over well and trying to change their opinion yeilded the worst results.

I have decided that the way I want to tackle this problem is to simply be the best Adrian I can be. Fuck what others think about my lifestyle. While they are out pounding brews have a “good” time. I will happily PR my back squat, perfect my snatch or throw down with my kids and wife.

If you are reading this and you are one of those status quo people, I don’t blame you. You are simply following your natural human nature. However, if you are truely progressive, wanting to live longer, look better, be stronger, sleep better, have more sex or laugh more, then please ask me how. I want to help you. I am just not going to offer it up unless you ask. You need to take the first step. Not me.

Be the best you that you can be possible be today.

We made a choice.

What choice are you going to make?

Liz, mid-snatch

I just thought this was a cool picture. Girls doing snatches RULE!

Do you live in reality?

I’ve had enough. I am just so disenfranchised with the fitness world today. There is so much information pointing you in a hundred different directions.

  • Eat this not that.
  • Cardio!
  • No Cardio!
  • Juicing is the way to healthy living.
  • Whole grains will save your life and lower your cholesterol.
  • Hot Yoga. Period.

If it is so easy to be fit, to look great and be healthy, then why are we seeing more and more of the population getting sicker, fatter and less healthy. In the age of information where everything is a Google search away, why are people not able to figure this out?

I keep racking my brain as to what the hell is the problem, and you know what? I think I may have figured part of it out.

One hypothesis I have is that people need to really want to change. I mean REALLY want to. If you have ever quit smoking you know what I mean. I will lay out the path of my quitting smoking journey about 8 years ago.

  1. I love smoking so much! Damn I look cool!
  2. Oh man, I keep waking up feeling great, having a smoke, then feeling like shit.
  3. I really have a quit smoking.
  4. Cough Cough Cough
  5. OK this time, I am going to quit, but I’ll start by cutting down.
  6. Two packs a day again? What the hell happened?
  7. Man I still feel like shit.
  8. Another morning, another pack of smokes, another depressing day smelling like shit.
  9. OK, this chick I really want to hook up with HATES smokers. Nah, she’ll ignore the cigarettes, I am too awesome.
  10. Shit, that didn’t work out.
  11. Its Tuesday, its sunny, I can’t wait for my morning routine. Coffee, muffin and a smoke! Fuck.. now I feel like shit again! Know what, thats it. I’m done.
  12. Call chick, date happens. Wow, that was awesome!
  13. Hook up with chick, months go by, get married, have kids, buy an SUV. Wholly crap, good thing I quit smoking!

It took me so many tries to quit smoking. Its embarrassing really. Looking back though, I know what happened. I wasn’t ready. How does all this relate back to my opening rant?

I believe that most people are just not ready to face reality. The reality that their poor choices are going to cause them to have pain, suffering and a shorter life. Everyone knows smoking will kill you. Why did it take me, a relatively intelligent person, so long to quit? Because I wasn’t willing to see, and more importantly, face reality.

Tool to face reality

Until you can truly face the reality of your choices, you will never change. Ever. Small steps be damned, you need to change your brain and SEE reality for what it is. Not what you have been telling yourself it is. Once you can do that, you will unlock a life you never thought possible. New jobs, new friends, new experiences will all be there for you.

So, what reality are you living in?

Open WOD 13.2

Open 13.2 Banner

Week two is in the books, and I am thrilled with my results. Let me set the stage….

This week Elizabeth and I finalized the purchase on our new home. After our home inspection on Friday we found out what we need to tackle as soon as we move in.

  • The hot water tank needs to be replaced
  • Vents need to be installed on the roof for the bathroom, range hood and dryer
  • Garage needs to be set up for CrossFit

Ok that last one is not a requirement of moving in. HA! Yes it is. As you can see by the above list, nothing major needs to be completed. After a quick discussion with Ian, we have a lead for a great plumber. It pays to have a CrossFitter contractor bro. What you dont have one yet? Well get out there and find one!

After the successful inspection, it was time to throw down. On a sunny Saturday we ended up at the Unaffiliated Garage for Open WOD 13.2.

The WOD:
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 10 minutes of:
115/75 pound Shoulder to overhead, 5 reps
115/75 pound Deadlift, 10 reps
15 Box jumps, 24″/20″ box

I was nervous for this WOD. I have a feeling this is going to be pretty common with me, being nervous before an Open WOD. I knew I could complete all the movements, but for how long. Could I make it the full 10 minutes without dropping the bar? Would I fatigue out? I just didn’t know. The mix of box jumps and deadlifts had me concerned as well. Upon arrive at the gym, Ian quickly let us in on his strategy. To do the box jumps as step ups. This is allowed under the official rules of the workout.

The shoulder to overhead was heavy for me. I can jerk at least 155lbs, but doing 115lb over and over and over and over and over… had me concerned. Especially while tired three or four rounds deep. In the end I was really happy with how this went. I ended up completing 184 reps or 6 rounds plus 4 should to overhead.

Elizabeth crushed this WOD. I mean CRUSHED it. To be perfectly honest, I was pretty frustrated at first with her results. She ended up with 214 reps. Or 7 rounds plus 4 shoulder to overhead. She did a whole round more than me. Then I came to my senses and was stoked that I am banging someone with that level of CrossFit in her. Ya, I’m hitting that. Nice work Elizabeth!

Ian and Maren also threw down and crushed this WOD. Watching these two is so inspiring. They have been at CrossFit for five years now, and it shows. Ian is sitting in 27th in his masters division (40-45) in Western Canada with 242 reps or weight rounds plus 2 shoulder to overhead. Impressive. At the time of writing this, Maren got 270. Epic.
